No Other
Gospel
Galatians 1:6-9
6
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the
grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would
pervert the gospel of Christ.
8
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you
than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9
As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel
unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Paul is not invoking a curse upon anyone, but he is declaring, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God, that divine judgment must fall upon any one who seeks to pervert the gospel of Christ or to turn people away from that gospel. In other words, the apostle Paul realizes the fact that the gospel is God’s only message to lost man, and that to pervert that gospel, to offer people something else in place of it, for a man to attempt to foist upon them an imitation gospel is to put in jeopardy the souls of these who listen to him.
Christ pointed out that those men who taught people to trust in their own efforts for salvation were blind leaders of the blind, and eventually both leader and led would fall into the ditch.
Matthew 15:10-14
10 And
he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
11 Not
that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the
mouth, this defileth a man.
12 Then
came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were
offended, after they heard this saying?
13 But
he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted,
shall be rooted up
14 Let
them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind,
both shall fall into the ditch.
It is a very serious thing to mislead men along spiritual lines; it is a terrible thing to give wrong direction when souls are seeking the way to heaven. If men believe a false gospel, if they put their trust in something that is contrary to the Word of God, their loss will be not for time only but for eternity.
These Galatians were living in their sins, they were living in idolatry, in the darkness of pagan superstition, when Paul came to them and preached the glorious gospel that tells how “Christ died for our sins . . . and that he was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (I Corinthians 15:3,4).
These Galatians, after Paul had been used to bring them into the liberty of grace, were being misled by false teachers, men who had come down from Judea, who professed to be Christians but had never been delivered from legality. They said to these young Christians, “You have only a smattering of the gospel; you need to add to this message that you have received, the teaching of the law of Moses, ‘Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved’” (Acts 15:1). Thus they threw them back on self-effort, turning their eyes from Christ and fixing them upon themselves and their ability to keep the law.
No matter how earnest people are, if they depend upon their own works they will never be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. How could any one have peace who believed that salvation depended on his own efforts? It is the gospel of the grace of God, that when believed, gives men full assurance.
John 5:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him
that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation;
but is passed from death unto life.
Paul is very angry to find people bringing in something else instead of the gospel of the grace of God, and he is surprised that these Galatians who rejoiced in the liberty or freedom of Christ should be so ready to go back to the bondage of the law.
I marvel says Paul. He marvels that they should so soon be turned aside from the message of grace. What is grace? It is God’s free, unmerited favor to those who have merited judgment. These Galatians, like us, had merited eternal judgment of being placed out of the presence of God forever. But God . . .God has given us one gospel to believe by faith.
Romans 3:23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.
Romans 6:23a
For the wages of sin is death;
Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.
Romans 6:23b
But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 10:13
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Verse 6 and 7 Unto another gospel: Which is not another. This may seem hard to understand, as we would read it in English. In the Greek, the words “another” are not the same. The first “another” means “a different” kind. Something added to or taken away from the original that would change it. Unto another gospel (a different kind of gospel). Not the true gospel, but a false gospel. The second “another” means “of the same kind.” Paul is making it clear to the Galatians by using this word in both meanings. You are being taught to believe a different gospel that is not the same as I taught you. An example of Which is not another (of the same kind) would be salvation by faith exercised in both the Old and New Testaments. One group looked toward the cross and the other back to the cross. By faith both believed Christ and Christ alone, as the Lamb of God, was the sin payment for their sins. A different gospel would cause you trouble and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Verse 8 Paul warns that if anyone, even an angel from heaven, would bring another gospel than what Paul gave, let them be accursed. Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormons, said that an angel came to him and brought him the Book of Mormon. They say the Bible is not enough, because an angel had revealed something different. God directed Paul to write “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” The Mormons teach another gospel which is not another. So do the Jehovah Witness, Christian Science, Catholic, Islamic, and all Eastern Religions.
Verse 9 Paul states twice If any preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. The word accursed in the Greek is Anathema. Let him be Anathema. The Greek word “Anathema” is found only one time in the Bible and it centers on an individual’s relationship toward the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 16:22
If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.
Now you may see two words here: Anathema Maranatha. Anathema means accursed. Maranatha means our Lord cometh. Putting them together means this person will be accursed when the Lord returns and gives His judgment. The divine judgment hangs over any man who seeks to mislead the lost by telling them of any other way of salvation save through the precious atoning blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation plus nothing.
John 5:22
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
On what gospel are you resting your hope for eternity? Do you know of any who are following the wrong gospel? What gospel are you sharing with them?
Ephesians 2:8,9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God: Not
of works, lest any man should boast.
