The Gospel as Ministered to Jew and Gentile

Galatians 2:1-10
1          Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.
2          And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles,
but privately to them, which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
3          But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:
4          And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which
we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:
5          To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
6          But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth
no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
7          But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;
8          (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me
toward the Gentiles:)
9          And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto m
they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the
circumcision.
10        Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

Verse 1 With Barnabas and took Titus with me also. Who was Barnabas? Who was Titus?

Let’s look briefly at Barnabas.

Acts 4:36-37
36        And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of
consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
37        Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

Acts 9:26-27
26        And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid
of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
27        But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the
Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

Acts 9:19-27
19        And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which
were at Damascus.
20        And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
21        But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name
in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
22        But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that
this is very Christ.
23        And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
24        But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
25        Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.
26        And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid
of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
27        But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lor
in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

Acts 11:22-26
22        Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth
Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.
23        Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpo
of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.
24        For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
25        Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:
26        And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they
assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Acts 11:27-30
27        And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28        And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the spirit that there should be great dearth
throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29        Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which
dwelt in Judaea:
30        Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Acts 12:25-13:3
25        And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them
John, whose surname was Mark.

ACTS CHAPTER 13
1          Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that
was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2          As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the
work whereunto I have called them.
3          And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

ACTS CHAPTER  15
Acts 15:1-41
1          And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after
the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
2          When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that
Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.
3          And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the
conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.
4          And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders,
and they declared all things that God had done with them.
5          But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise
them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
6          And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
7          And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know
how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the
gospel, and believe.
8          And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
9          And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
10        Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor
we were able to bear?
11        But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
12        Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and
wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
13        And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:
14        Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
15        And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
16        After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again
the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
17        That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith
the Lord, who doeth all these things.
18        Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
19        Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
20        But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things
strangled, and from blood.
21        For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
22        Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company
to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
23        And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto
the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:
24        Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting
your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
25        It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved
Barnabas and Paul,
26        Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
27        We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.
28        For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these
necessary things;
29        That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication:
from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
30        So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together,
they delivered the epistle:
31        Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.
32        And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.
33        And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.
34            Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.
35        Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
36        And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we
have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.
37        And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.
38        But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with
them to the work.
39        And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so
Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;
40        And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.
41        And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

Let’s look briefly at Titus.

II Corinthians 2:12-13
12        Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
13        I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from
thence into Macedonia.

II Corinthians 7:6
Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

II Corinthians 7:13-14
Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because
his spirit was refreshed by you all. For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake
all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.

II Corinthians 8:6
Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

II Corinthians 8:16
But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.

II Corinthians 8:23
Whether any do inquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be inquired of,
they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

II Corinthians 12:18
I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit?
walked we not in the same steps?

Galatians 2:1-3
1          Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.
2          And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles,
but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
3          But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

II Timothy 4:10
For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to
Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

Titus 1:4
To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Paul says, “I took Titus with me also,” and he was a Gentile. He had never submitted to circumcision, and Paul never
suggested that he should, and so he took him to Jerusalem, as it were to the headquarters of the legalists.

A few years before, God had given Peter a special revelation, namely, that Jew and Gentile when saved were now
to be recognized as one Body in Christ. Peter said, “For I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.”
and the Lord said unto him, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common” thus indicating the sanctification
of the Gentiles. That prepared Peter for the mission to the house of Cornelius, where he preached Christ and opened
the door of the kingdom to the Gentiles.

But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. Paul was saying to the
Galatians, Titus was accepted as a follow-Christian just as he was. What an answer to those who were criticizing him
and misleading his converts.

Concerning the false teachers, Paul refused even on the ground of Christian love to submit to these men. Therefore,
even through he mingled with the apostles and elders who had been saved years before he knew Christ, he did not stand
in awe of them. They might be recognized leaders, but God does not accept any man’s person, and they were simply
brothers in Christ. They had to be taught of God, and so did he. He does not ask them to confer any authority on him
nor give him any special instruction of the truth that he was to proclaim to the Gentiles, though he was glad to sit down
on common ground and talk things over in a brotherly way.

“But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the
gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;”
notice the preposition rendered here “of.” The Greek word may be
rendered “for,” and the point was this – they saw that God had given him a special revelation, a special understanding
of the gospel for the Gentiles. God fitted Paul to work among the Gentiles and God fitted Peter to work among the Jews.
This was the same gospel of the same kind to two different groups of people. Today, everyone one is either Jew or
Gentile. Today. The gospel is for both.

Here is the preaching of Peter to the Jews:

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come
from the presence of the Lord; And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the
heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy
prophets since the world began. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning
away every one of you from his iniquities” (Acts 3:19-21, 26).

Peter also said,

Acts 4:10-12
10        Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
11        This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
12        Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved.

Is this different from Paul’s gospel? It is exactly the same, but Peter is presenting it in a way that the Jewish
people would thoroughly understand.

Read Peter’s approach to Cornelius, a Gentile:

Acts 10:38-43
38        How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good,
and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39        And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they
slew and hanged on a tree:
40        Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41        Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink
with him after he rose from the dead.
42        And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God
to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43        To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive
remission of sins.

Is this a different gospel from what we should preach today? Is this a different gospel from that proclaimed by the
apostle Paul? Surely not. It is the same gospel, the gospel of the grace of God, salvation alone through the finished
work of our Lord Jesus.

Peter’s gospel to the Jews:

1 Peter 1:18-20
18        Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your
vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19        But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20        Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

Paul’s gospel to Jew and Gentile:

Acts 13:32-39
32        And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,
33        God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written
in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
34        And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this
wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
35        Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
36        For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his
fathers, and saw corruption:
37        But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
38        Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the
forgiveness of sins:
39        And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Is there anything different from that which Peter preached? Nothing different, but a fuller unfolding. Peter is never
said to have preached justification, but forgiveness and remission. Paul added justification. When God forgives through
the risen, glorified Jesus He not only forgives but He justifies. The two messages are the one; but Paul’s is a little fuller
than that of Peter.

And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they
gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the
circumcision. After shaking hands in agreement, two teams of missionaries went out with the same kind of
message – one to the Jews and the other to the Gentiles.
