ANSWERS TO LESSON 10

The Matter of Scriptural Giving

When it comes to finances, most people say, "I just can't do it." Well, think with me a minute on the Word of God. If God commanded it, then He would surely provide a way for you and me to practice Scriptural tithing and giving.

TITHING is giving to God 10% of all that He has given to us. May I add, this is both before and after death.
We'll look at this in more detail later in this lesson.

GIVING is a New Testament concept of Grace. It starts where tithing stops. This too, is before and after death.

Abraham started Scriptural giving Gen. 14:20
Jacob continued Scriptural giving Gen. 28:22
Moses incorporated Scriptural giving Lev. 27:30
Nehemiah restored Scriptural giving Neh. 13:11-12
Malachi commanded Scriptural giving      Mal. 3:8-11
Jesus commended Scriptural giving Matt. 23:23
God ordained Scriptural giving I Cor. 9:13
Paul explained Scriptural giving I Cor. 16:1-2, II Cor. Chapters 8 and 9, Heb. 7:8

Paul said, in II Cor. 8:8, 24 that we should prove the sincerity of our love. One area in which we can outwardly display our love and sincerity is by Scriptural giving. Jesus said that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Also, notice Luke 6:38. You just can't out-give God. Take note of Proverbs 11:25, II Cor. 9:6-8. You must enact this by faith, Heb. 11:16, Proverbs 3:5-6. Tithing is probably one of the most difficult steps for a Christian. Blessed is the Christian that learns Scriptural giving; both before and after death.

10.01 What is a natural way to feel about our money and possessions (House / car / etc.)? Deut. 8:17
I have earned it. It is mine.

10.02 From what source does everyone's material possessions come?

The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world, and they that dwell therein.

10:04 With what does the Lord want us to be content? Heb. 13:5 With what we have.

10.05 In your own words, write out Matt. 6:31-33
Trust God for all your needs. He will provide for His own. What He provides we should be thankful
and not covet things of others.

10.06 What are the results of a strong desire for money? I Tim. 6:9
          Temptation. Snare. Destruction. Perdition.

10.07 In Luke 12:15-21:
          (a) What did God call this man? Rich man.
          (b) Of what kind of person does Christ say this? Luke 12:21
Laid up treasures for himself. He was not rich toward God.
          (c) What is Christ's warning? Luke 12:15
Take heed and beware of covetousness:
for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

10.08 How did some of the early Christians react to the loss of their possessions? Heb. 10:34
Give joyfully knowing they would receive a better and enduring sibstance.

STEWARDSHIP involves managing someone else's property, according to the owner's will, not according to the
steward's will. The Christian is a steward of both his life and his possessions, since both belong to God.

10.09 What are some areas in which God expects us to be faithful stewards?
          (a) I Cor. 6:19-20 Your body.
          (b) Eph. 5:15-16 Your daily walk - Do you waste God's time?
          (c) I Peter 4:10 Your gift - singing, hospitality, sewing, fixing cars, etc.
          (d) I Thess. 2:4 The Gospel. We are to witness.
          (e) I Chron. 29:12-14 Riches, honor, all things.

10.10 Consider Matt. 25:14-30.
Write in your own words. What is the principle of this Scripture?
God wants us to multiply what He gives us. We are to gain for God. Soul winning.
Also what He gives us we are not to keep to ourselves.

10.11 Was each servant given a different measure of responsibility? Yes.
If He gives you more, He expects more.
If you can handle a little, Hw will give you a little more.

10.12 Did the master expect them to produce in proportion to what they had been given? Yes.

10.14 How much does God need our material gifts? Psalm 50:10, 12. None

10.15 However, what unusual opportunity does God offer us? Matt. 6:20 To lay up treasures in Heaven.

Christ's teaching on giving money emphasizes the importance of giving not only because of love, or duty, but
for the sake of eternal reward. He made it clear that although we can't take it with us, we can send it on ahead.

10.16 What do you think this means:
There is more blessing in giving than receiving? Acts 20:35
There is a real blessing when we obey God's Word. We can not out give God. Sometimes we are required
to give the "widow's mite" . . . measured not by the amount, but by the heart attitude. Are we willing to give
when we have very little. Prove God in your giving!

10.17 According to Matt. 19:16-22:
          (a) The basic issue was that of loyalty to God. True
          (b) Was Jesus trying to make the young man poor or rich. Rich
Explain Rich in heavenly treasures that are eternal.

10.18 What principles underline New Testament giving.
          (a) II Cor. 8:9 The poor gave more. They gave that others might benefit.
          (b) II Cor. 9:6-7 Give cheerfully. Don't short change God.
          (c) Acts 2:42-47 They cared about each other. They gave to meet the needs of others.

Read Ex. 25:2;  Ex.. 35:21, 29;
         I Chron. 29:9; and II Cor. 9:7

10.19 What quality in our giving is important to God? Heart attitude. Out of love.

10.20 What kind of giving is not commendable?
Grudgingly or of necessity - Having a "I have to give" attitude.

10.21 We find some guidelines for giving in I Cor. 16:2:
          (a) How many are encouraged to give? Everyone.
          (b) The Corinthians were instructed to put aside their gifts
                (1) at regular times (systematically)
                (2) at irregular times (when ever they could not afford it)
          (c) How were they to determine how much to give? As God hath prospered them.

10.22 How can we honor the Lord? Proverbs 3:9
With the first fruits of all thine increase. Gross not net income.

10.23 II Cor. 9:6 says it is wise to give bountifully, not sparingly.

10.24 Of what can the liberal giver be assured? Luke 6:38 That God will repay liberally.

10.25 In Prov. 11:24-25, what has God promised the one who gives generously?
          (a) Prov. 11:24 Increase. (A bumper crop).
          (b) Prov. 11:25 Fat. Will receive generously. / Withhold and ye shall yield poor crops.

Review carefully II Corinthians Chapters 8 and 9.

10.26 According to Matthew 6:1-4, the reward of giving can be lost by what?
Boosting of your giving. Why? You are seeking glory of man and not God.

10.27 To whom should we give?
          (a) I Cor. 9:11, 14 Give to others the Gospel in Word and example.
          (b) Gal. 6:6 Communicate. Greek means to share with others, distribute, support by example.
          (c) Prov. 19:17 Give to the poor via the Lord through your church offering.
          (d) James 2:15-16 Give to the needy. Clothes, food, shelter.

10.28 In Mark 12:41-44:
          (a) What was Jesus observing? How people were giving.
          (b) What did He praise, and why? The widow because she gave what she could not afford to give.
          (c) How did most people contribute to the temple treasury? From the overage or abundance.
          (d) How was the widow's contribution in percentage to the others? She gave all that she had.

10.29 What promises are given to those who give to the Lord's work? Phil. 4:15-19
It is a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God. God supplies our need (not wants). He replaces
more according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

10.30 How does one give after death?
          (a) Tithing 10% of one's life insurance to the church.
This can be done simply by changing your beneficiary
to include the Lord's work . . . the church.
We tithe while we are alive, why not in our death?
          (b) Have an extra life insurance making the church the full benefactor.
          (c) Giving property, antiques, cars, real estate, memorials.

What could you give back to God?________________________________

A London paper offered a prize for the best definition of money.
                                                                           This was the winning answer:

"Money is an instrument that can buy every thing
but happiness
and pay your fare to every place
but Heaven."

CONCLUSION:
Always remember that God owns everything. We are His stewards, handling His goods according to His will and not our own. Once this truth is discovered, you will marvel at what God will do through you for His work, the Church.

May you support the church both in life and in death.
