Chapter 1 Verses 24-27

God’s Judgment against Gays and Lesbians

 Romans 1:24-27
24            Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25        Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26        For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27        And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Sandwiched between verse 18 which reads “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness” and verse 32 which warns, “Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them” are the reasons for the judgment of a loving God.

Truly we are living in the days when God’s judgment can fall at any time. There is a growth pattern in unbelief, it does not
happen all at once. It begins with a foolish heart that is darkened (verse 21); reinforced by pride of thinking they should
change, but being too wise to do so they become fools (verse 22); and knowing that God is going to judge them (verse 32),
they continually go down the wrong road of life in the direction away from God. My friends, when we go away from God
we move in the direction of Hell and eternal torment.

When YOU continually choose to do wrong and continually choose not to heed God’s calling for salvation, God’s calling
for service, God’s calling for obedience, God’s calling for a sanctified life, He is going to give you up to your wrongfully
way of life. Three times in this passage it says, God also gave them up to uncleanness (verse 24), God gave them up unto
vile affections (verse 26), and God gave them over to a reprobate mind (verse 28). Yet we read in verse 32, “Who
knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have
pleasure in them that do them.” Today, if you find yourself in any of the categories mentioned in our text, God is giving
you a call for repentance and a call for freedom.

God divides the text into two parts. First, in verses 24-27, He directs His Words to the gays and lesbians of this world. Secondly, in verses 28-32, He directs His Word to unruly children and unruly adults. In this lesson I want to look at the first part.

In the eyes of the world the gays and lesbians are just another lifestyle. The media is promoting them as something good and acceptable. They are being forced on us by the film industry, by the education system, by television, and by the law of the land. Be not deceived, God is not mocked. God does not condone this lifestyle and neither should any Christian.

Verse 24
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves.
God says, “They dishonor their own bodies between themselves.” It is through the lust of their hearts, not the lust of the flesh, that they fall. Flesh has natural desires, which may or may not be yielded to.

II Timothy 2:22
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

James 4:3-4
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Theirs is an unnatural lust; a lust for a same sex relationship, a lust for a same sex marriage, a lust for a same sex lifestyle.

Verse 25
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
They or their lifestyle of sin does not honor God. They say, “God made us this way.” God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Nor did God make Eve and Ada. He created the man for the woman and the woman for the man. They reject the truth and reject the truth giver. They changed the truth of God into a lie.

Their love and affection is not God ward, but toward themselves and in an unnatural way. Sadly to say, even some dominations have approved gay ministers and lesbian Sunday School teachers. There is even a gay/lesbian denomination of churches known as the “Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches.” Its mission is ministering to and educating the world about gay Christians. That’s an oxymoron, “gay Christians”. An oxymoron is a combination of contradictory words. Rev. Lou Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition said, “Homosexuality and Christianity are polar opposites and the Bible is very clear about this.”

Verse 26
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature.
There are natural and normal appetites of the body. God is not speaking of these, or even the abuse of these – like adultery or harlotry. God is describing that state of unnatural lusts of the heart in which all normal desires are left behind.

Some might say, “See, God made me this way and here is a verse to prove it.” God gave them up unto vile affections. Not so. We have to look at the words “For this cause.” What caused God to give them up unto vile affections? The women did change the natural use (of their body) into that which is against nature. It is unnatural to do what they do. These women are called lesbians. “Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” As they rejected God and the natural blessing of God and knowingly choose to do wrong, God gave them up to their sin.

Verse 27
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
God is no respecter of persons. There are men just as guilty as the women. God gives them up too. They have not only forgotten the holy relations of marriage, but even the burnings of ordinary lust, and plunge into the nameless horrors of unnatural lust men with men working that which is unseemly.

These two groups (gays and lesbians) say, “We have rights.”  They want to be accepted. They are being accepted by man and man’s law, but not by God or by God’s law. One commentator wrote, “The law of history, in virtue of which the forsaking of God is followed among men by a parallel growth of immorality, is not a purely natural order of things; the power of God is active in the execution of this law.”

Receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. God will be their final judge. And His judgment will be just. Today there is a need of a holiness lifestyle that only salvation can bring. There is a need to please God and not the lust of the hearts. Just turn on the news or most TV programs or even videos, and one can see the shame of this sin caused by people who choose a gay and lesbian lifestyle. Not only is it immoral, it is unmoral.

The only rescue is God's plan of salvation requiring every person to become born again. Jesus said, "Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again" (John 3:7).

No matter what our high courts and laws may state in the future, our final judgment will be before God. His righteous judgment will be against all gays and lesbians and against all who promote such sin. The foundation of the problem is there is no fear of God before the eyes of our high courts to made decisions that will honor God and His Word. The other problem is the "silence" of God's people.
