Chapter 2:8-11

Lesson 5 with Answers
Dear Church In Smyrna

I. Unto the Pastor of the church of Smyrna
write: These things saith the First and the Last
which was dead, and is alive.

II. Smyrna is the Suffering church.

III. Its name derives from its trade in the herb myrrh, which was widely used as an anesthetic and embalming substance. The Greek word “smurna” is found in
(1) Matt. 2:11
(2) John 19:39
(3) Mark 15:23

IV. The Christians were caught between the Jews and the
and the pagans. Their stores were boycotted
they were not permitted to sell; they could not get jobs.

V. In A.D. 155, Polycarp was brought before the authorities and given the choice of worshipping Caesar or be put to death.

VI. Polycarp said, “ Eighty and six years have I served
Him, and He never did me wrong. How then can I blaspheme my King and Saviour?

VII. I know thy works, and tribulation,
and poverty, (but thou art rich)

VIII. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life(2:10).

IX. To the Christian who wins the victory, to the one who is
faithful, the Lord promises not merely a crown of beauty and honor but a crown of life.

X. “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” James 1:12
